When I went to the Gynea last week, the lady who saw me before the doctor (she asked me all the questions, weighed me, and took my blood pressure) told me that if I get sick, I should see my GP, as there are meds that I can take while I'm pregnant. As a matter of fact, she said it's worse for the baby if I get really sick, so I have to take meds.
I laughed it off, and told her that I hardly ever get sick.
Well, now I feel like an idiot. It all started last night. My chest is on fire, I cough constantly and my nose is all blocked and gross.
My husband recons I should go to the Dr. today, before it gets worse. But everyone I know, who's been sick while pregnant, just dealt with it - without meds. I just don't feel right taking ANY meds at all, Even if I have a headache, I just put up with it. I don't even drink panados.
I would appreciate any thoughts from all you mommies who's been there... or even if you haven't - any advise?
As far as I know there is nothing you can take. I can tell you now that the doctor will most probably tell you to wait it out. Most meds anyway are to make you feel better, not necessarily heal you. If you want to heal quicker, take lots of Vit C and things. There isn't much you can take while pregnant.
Thanks Pebo! Do you think I can drink med-lemon?
You can take penecillin, but with pro-biotics (to prevent thrush), these can only be presecribed by a Doctor, I'd rather go and see your GP, a pregnant woman's immune system is compromised as it is

Thanks Pebo! Do you think I can drink med-lemon?

NO!
Thank you! I'll go to the GP tomorrow if it's not better. I just feel horrible today!
Is things like Halls ok?
Yes
Its difficult being preggos, the asprin in the med lemon and most other flu medicines is a NO GO and I'm sure there are a whole lot of others too, its best to see the Doc or maybe phone your pharmacist, maybe you'll be allowed something natural like Septogaurd :suspicious:
You can take homeopathic things like Septogard, as TM said (its a natural antibiotic), panado to relieve the pain symptoms, and thats about it. And antibiotics, which wont work unless you have a bacterial infection somewhere. I know how you feel...when I was pregnant now I had the worst sore throat ever. It was so bad I could hardly swallow my own saliva, sorry tmi. I took panado and drank warm tea at 4am, and in the end, after almost 2 weeks,I got some antibiotics. It only helped a bit though.
when i got the flu while pregnant, i called my gynae and he told me that i can use Panado Medi-Sip. it's like Med-lemon and safe to use during pregnancy. I hope you feel better soon. my gp also gave me cough medicine, but i don't remember the name.
Septoguard is AWSOME, I still take it now

Bambi.... I agree with the lady at the gynea that sometimes meds are needed... if it's just a head cold... sure - deal with it. But if you have a temp and are really getting sick, I would go to the doc. There never used to be anything that you can take, but lately there is certain meds you can take when you are pregnant. So even if you go to your doc and he /she says " live with it" then at least you did have it checked out.
P.S.
My whole family uses septogaurd everyday. Wonderful stuff
Thanks for all the advice! I don't have a fever yet - it just really hurts when I cough (My chest burns), so I'll wait till tomorrow and see how it goes.
I can't believe this is happening to me right now - we're moving house this weekend! :arghh:
Shame Bambi - it never rais it pours hey? Hang in there.... you'll get through this!!
Forgot about Septoguard! I agree, if it's really bad then go to the doc rather. Flu symptoms include fever and you feel grotty but if it's just a cough and a snotty nose then it's probably just a normal cold.
I had flu a few weeks ago. It also was terrible. I took Berrocca (it is safe in pregnancy and has loads of VitC) and panado for the pains AND loads of rest (sleep pref) to me that would be your best option if not willing to go to the gp. But if its not that bad and you feel like youd rather just wait it out its ok, but the moment it gets worse go see your dr.
Be carefull of drinking too much Vitamin C as well. Even natural things can be bad for you. I would go see my dr today still if I was you. There are meds that you can use while pregnant and what the lady said is true. It is worse for you and baby if you are very ill.
There is a new medicine on the market called Efferflu C. It is safe for pregnant woman. Avoid things with aspirin in it like Med-Lemon!
Good luck, rest a lot, drink plenty water and for goodness sake...take a Panado!
